The San Francisco Bay Wildlife Society is a not-for-profit partner working to support the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge and its mission to ensure that wildlife and people co-exist effectively, that native diverse ecosystems and the migratory and endangered species living there thrive in a changing world and be preserved for future generations. The Wildlife Society is currently seeking a part-time Grant Writer to help administer current grants and to develop and write new grant proposals to foundations and other grant making organizations, and to persuasively communicate the refuge’s mission and programs to potential funders.

Major Responsibilities
  • Responsible for conducting the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundation and corporate sources.
  • Perform prospect research on foundations and corporations to evaluate prospects for corporate and foundation grants.
  • Gather information necessary to report to corporate/foundation funders on current grant programs.
  • Comply with all grant reporting as required by foundation/corporate donors.
  • Provide stewardship to current donors, including work with specific refuge program grantees to provide regular written updates (e.g., newsletters) to corporate and foundation donors.
  • Understand institutional history and programs.
  • Maintain current records in database and in paper files, including grant tracking and reporting.
  • Track statistics relevant to development and provide Society with written materials necessary for donor stewardship (e.g., visitor number and diversity, educational program attendance).
  • Work with SFBWS BOD members and FWS Grants & Research Manager to provide development input for all written institutional materials (including Quarterly and Annual Reports).
  • Assist with other fundraising projects as requested.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals.
  • Self-motivated, detail oriented, and highly-organized.
  • Strong editing skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of fundraising information sources.
  • Experience with proposal writing and institutional donors.
  • Knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect research.
  • Strong contributor in team environments
Qualifications
  • Minimum of two years’ experience with grant writing.
  • Previous experience with not-for-profit fundraising.
  • Able to work well in a team environment, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Able to monitor and meet income goals.
  • Desirable: Bachelor degree in communications, environmental education, or similar degree.
Salary

Salary is $20 to $25 per hour (depending on experience), 20 hours per week, approved for six months, beyond six months dependent on progress made obtaining grants.
