New web-based mapping tool from US FWS Pacific Southwest Region

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Pacific Southwest Region has launched a professional but easy-to-use web mapping portal that is available for use by employees, partners, and the public. Little or no GIS skills are needed to use this portal.​ Take the tour and let U.S. FWS know what you think.

The web mapping portal is managed and curated by members of various programs and cooperator groups within the Pacific Southwest Region. It is designed to showcase data and maps of spatial information for particular geographies, topics, projects and administrative offices. Various searchable topics and data layers presented on this site include subsets of the data available across the platform.

The web mapping portal is intended to support many of the internal or public web mapping needs of the Pacific Southwest Region at the individual office, program, or project level. Anyone can use this portal to access or share existing maps or create their own custom maps. There are some important enhancements underway that will be available very soon, including secure sharing and storage of sensitive or draft GIS data.

With this portal, you can:

• View, edit, create, and analyze geospatial conservation data
• Overlay, filter, and style datasets
• Create custom drawings, buffers, labels, and comments
• Combine your own data with data from other reliable conservation sources
• View data as maps, graphs, and animations
• Save, print, and export information in various formats
• Share maps you make with the public online or in printed reports

Use the analysis tools to:

• Explore the attribute data embedded in conservation datasets
• Find intersections between datasets
• View animations of conservation datasets over time
• Generate custom analyses and summary reports

The web maps and datasets should be considered dynamic and will expand or change as needed. Discovering, using, and sharing mapped information is relatively easy; stewardship of data and maps within this site will require some GIS data stewardship skills. The US FWS looks forward to creating a cadre of data stewards across the Pacific Southwest Region who can support the office, programs, or projects with this new web mapping portal.
